Sustainable Building & Design

These photos taken in Japan in 2004 highlight traditional methods of farm and rural design and construction, utilizing sustainable and indigenous materials.

The rush thatch roofs are beautifully trimmed and set. Of particular note are the natural live shaped logs, unsawn, that are then patterned and joined to produce and level and square building.

This geometry emerges entirely from an handmade aesthetic and reflects the natural shapes of wood as it grows, rather than the straight lines that industry requires.

These express a dimension of biophilia that resonates for all people, I think.
